We are all eager for some sunny weather and the chance to enjoy eating outside with a BBQ or a summertime picnic, but we don’t want to be joined by those pesky wasps.
For most of the summer we don’t pay wasps much attention, until they pay attention to us! Wasps play an important role in our Ecosystem, they are nature’s natural pest controllers preying on other insects such as caterpillars, flies, aphids and beetles that attack our crops and can be a useful ally to our gardens.
During the early summer months, worker wasps are busy collecting high protein foods to feed their growing colony. They actively hunt for other insects such as caterpillars to feed their larvae and if you happen to be eating outside you may find they are attracted to your ham sandwich or BBQ chicken thigh. They won’t turn down the opportunity for an easy meal and if you put a piece of your sandwich or BBQ to one side away from where you are eating you may find they leave you alone!
In the autumn the colony breaks down, and thousands of worker wasps are made redundant and homeless and this is when they become a problem, becoming increasingly aggressive and this can be annoying when you are trying to enjoy a bit of alfresco dining. They’re focused on finding a quick sugar fix turning their attention to sugary foods such as your glass of Pinot Grigio or your pint of Moretti. In the natural world the redundant workers spend the end of their lives fighting each other as they become drunk on fermenting fruit before the night frosts kills them off.
A good method of keeping these angry larger louts (wasps) away from your alfresco dining, BBQ or picnic is using wasp traps. These are a chemical free solution to your wasp problem, using a sugary solution of sugary water and jam, and can trap hundreds of wasps keeping you free to enjoy your meal wasp free.
You can simply make a DIY wasp by simply cutting a plastic squash bottle in half or you can buy one online. For more details on wasp control contact Eco trap Services.
