I received a call from a resident in Tunbridge Wells “There’s a rat in my Kitchen?!”
The first step to good rat control is identify where the problem is coming from? A thorough inspection of the kitchen found that there was indeed a rat/rats in their kitchen living under their Kitchen units. Evidence of rat droppings and gnawed food detected under the kitchen units.
The second step to rat control is to locate the rats entry points! Further investigation found that the rats had gnawed a hole around the waste pipe leading from the washing machine through the wall. This is a common problem that pest control encounters in domestic properties. The next step – Rat control. If left uncontrolled rats can cause serious problems such as chewing electrical cables and causing fires or chewing the water pipes and causing flooding and contaminating food stuffs. Trapping – trapping rats is one of the safest and most efficient ways to quickly eliminate rats from a property. Setting rat traps, these should be concealed away from pets or children and placed close to entry point’s, food sources and rat runs. Good hygiene is very important and the kitchen needs to be clean and free from food. Keeping food items in sealed containers helps to remove any alternative food sources for the rats. Using a rodenticide bait might also be necessary as rats can be neophobic and very wary of new objects. Rodenticide baits need to be carefully placed in external bait stations away from pets, and other wildlife. After rats had been successfully removed from the property in Tunbridge Wells the next step is blocking the entry point to prevent any further rats getting into the kitchen. Depending on the size of the holes to be blocked rodent proofing is best done using either a wire mesh or steel wool and a silicon sealant.
